Daniel Craig pays tribute to dead rocker Chris Cornell - the man behind his first James Bond theme
The 007 actor has passed on his condolences
Daniel Craig has expressed his sadness following the death of Chris Cornell. The Soundgarden and Audioslave star, whose sad death at the age of 52 was announced today, was the man behind the theme tune to Daniel's first ever outing as James Bond. Chris co-wrote You Know My Name with David Arnold for 007 flick Casino Royale, and sang it over the opening credits. Daniel, who has gone on to star in a further three Bond films, told Mirror Online that he was sad to hear about Chris' tragic passing.
He said: "This is very sad news, my thoughts are with his family."
Chris was chosen by Bond producers to perform the track as they wanted a strong male singer. The single was not included on the Casino Royale soundtrack, but went on to sell more than 148,000 copies in the UK and appear on Chris' second solo album, Carry On. At the time, Chris said he hadn't been a fan of the last few Bond movies, but was intrigued by the casting of Daniel and decided to accept the job on that basis.
On writing the song, he said : "It is difficult, I think, to write lyrics for a character, so really I just kind of wandered around for about a month not thinking about it too much, until I sort of formulated some idea of a way that I could approach it, where I'm kind of relating to what's in the character in the movie. And because this particular Bond is very edgy, but also has a lot of emotional depth, it's a lot easier."
Chris was found dead in his hotel bathroom by a family friend in what is believed to be a suicide, Detroit Police has confirmed to Mirror Online.
Michael Woody of Detroit Police Department said officers were called to the MGM Grand hotel in Detroit at midnight last night in response to an emergency call from one of Chris' friends. When police arrived, they forced entry to the hotel room and found the rocker unresponsive in the en suite bathroom, where he was pronounced dead at the scene. "We are investigating this as a suspected suicide," he confirmed to us. "That is the line we are proceeding along."
Police then rang Chris' wife Vicky to break the awful news to her, he added.
Chris' official cause of death will not be recorded until the medical examiner has conducted an investigation, the results of which could be made public later today or tomorrow morning.
